Facebook’s New WordPress Integration Plugin

You can see it integrated into this blog, at the bottom of this page. Facebook’s official WordPress integration plugin [note: website changes since this post]. Like many others out there, it requires developing a Facebook app, linking your Facebook page to the plugin and setting a huge variety of settings, but unlike some others it is free.

Don’t fall for anyone trying to sell you the new official WordPress/Facebook connection plugin. I’ve already gotten about a dozen offers in my email box to buy special training for it. Really not necessary. Or worth the money. Because the plugin is free and available here:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/facebook/

This is the official Facebook plugin, which means it’s going to get more support and upgrades than the average plugin, and (if my history with Facebook holds true) maybe even break or be drastically altered regularly for mystical reasons that we don’t get to know before they happen.
Anyway, here’s the developer area for the WordPress/Facebook integration plugin on Facebook.
There are other good alternatives available out there, such as the “Add Link to Facebook” plugin that I feel has a lot more flexibility, but also requires a little more install and maintenance.

Or the Simple Facebook Connect which is quite simple and easy to run but can’t be as easily customized. There are also much better ways to connect facebook to wordpress for tab management or to truly manage a facebook business page and these are not yet well managed here, in my opinion.

Also, if you’re running commerce or many Facebook business pages, you’ll need more flexibility.
Basically, my point is: I wouldn’t turn my back on third party plugins yet, but I do agree that the Facebook/Wordpress plugin – official version – needed to be made. These two tools are far too commonly used in tandem.
Get ready to see a lot more blog posts auto-posting to Facebook.

(Now if Google Plus would just make auto-posting possible, my world would be complete. Kinda. For the moment.)
